Harnessing the Power of Generative AI to Enhance Cybersecurity - Pros and Cons

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) can be used as a powerful tool for enhancing the cybersecurity of businesses, organizations, and associations. It represents a transformative shift in how security professionals predict, detect, and respond to threats. This technology leverages machine learning models, particularly those based on generative adversarial networks (GANs), to simulate cyber-attacks and defensive strategies. The capability of generative AI to produce new data instances that mimic real-world datasets allows cybersecurity systems to evolve rapidly, adapting to new threats as they emerge. As these AI models undergo training, they become increasingly sophisticated in understanding the nuances of security data, enabling them to identify subtle patterns of malicious activity that might elude traditional detection methods. Now that conversational large language foundational models such as ChatGPT are being used with increasing frequency, generative AI can be harnessed effectively. The potential for GenAI to impact cybersecurity is massive.

Generative AI can help with many business tasks including faster product development, enhanced customer experience, improved employee productivity and much more. Specifically with regard to improving cybersecurity, according to a recent Splunk survey, 91% of respondents siad that they are using GenAI and almost half said it will be a game-changer for their security teams. Generative AI is being used approximately 7% of the time for business continuity purposes, and that percentage is growing. It helps business prepare for cyber criminals malicious use of generative AI for a variety of cyber attacks and fraud including deep fakes and social engineering attacks. Being able to reproduce what possible scenarios employees could face enables organizations to develop controls to mitigate those scenarios.

Additionally, generative AI’s ability to analyze massive amounts of data as in learning and replicating patterns in text, it can also learn from patterns found in cyber threats and vulnerabilities. GenAI allows deeper analysis into that data including faster pattern recognition and the ability to identify potential risks more rapidly. It is in this regard where generative AI really shines in helping secure organizations from cyber attacks. By learning and being trained on vast amounts of historical data, it can then predict future threats and help mitigate them.

This session will take a look into the pros and cons of using generative AI in cybersecurity and discuss the advantages and potential solutions to the many challenges being faced by businesses today.
