Inspired by his mother Eileen, who learned homestyle cooking as the oldest of nine kids growing up in rural North Dakota, Mal grew up immersed in the art and practice of great homestyle cooking, with German and Norweigean influences.

Blending his love of the outdoors and entrepreneurship, he earned a BS in Forest Resources and an MBA from the University of Idaho.

But the pull of culinary riches was too strong.

In 2000, Mal and his wife Sandy launched a specialty food sales rep business that evolved into a vertically integrated enterprise—manufacturing, retail/wholesale ecommerce, co-packing, distribution, private label, and food product design for sauces, salsas, dry mixes, condiments, jams, and syrups.

In 2023, he founded the Cottage Food Business Facebook group (now 83K+ members) and the CottageFoodology newsletter on Substack (7K+ subscribers).

An online food business training center is in the works, along with the Cottage Kitchen Creators Virtual Summit.

Mal is a startup business specialist, dealing with the practical business and regulatory side of launching a small business enterprise. While he primarily works in the food niche, his expertise offers value as a speaker/trainer in any entrepreneurial industry.
