"When Pigs Fly" - Life Lessons from my Journey into Stand-Up Comedy
Alex Brandin Workshop Facilitator & Writer

From an early age, creative writing has been one of my hobbies. It has been a passion that never diminished. Whether it was publishing pieces for newspapers and magazines or private journaling, the joy of storytelling remained a constant. I learned early on that I tend to find clarity more easily through writing.

My favorite genre is comedy. One of my early projects was writing a somewhat darkly humorous exploration of a fictional terror attack on the United States. However, after the tragic events of 9/11, I felt it best to put this work aside.

When I ended my corporate career as a Financial Controller in 2010, I dedicated myself fully to the facilitation of workshops on energy healing, self-development, and other spiritual topics. During this new chapter, I began to engage in writing social media blogs, and I also contributed to multi-author books on various subjects.

Recently, I felt that I needed a challenge to keep things interesting and to accelerate my growth. I started a new format, a mix of storytelling and stand-up comedy. I created the program “To Be Triggered Is To Be Alive.” The first segment is called “When Pigs Fly.” This challenging and rewarding creative process has already been an adventure. Interestingly, with stand-up comedy, final clarity emerges not through writing but through speaking. And as expected, it has accelerated my own growth and is revealing deeper truths.

How I Began My Writing Career
KEVIN M. HALL

Kevin, dad, grandpa and papa are the monikers that I happily embrace daily.  I live with my wife of 47 years in Rush NY, a suburb of Rochester, and I have 2 married children and 6 grandchildren.  My education is in computer science, and I spent a successful 40+ year career in the private sector with 2 fortune 500 companies.

During my retirement I began writing, publishing two books in 2022, and I am actively working on my third. My books genre are memoir/history books. When asked why I started writing, I respond ‘because of my grandkids who have repeatedly asked, what was it like when you were a kid grandpa?’

My first book chronicled the many adventures of my growing up in small town America in a by-gone era.  The many fun times with family and friends attending elementary through 8th grade in Ilion NY (that I call the Mayberry of the east).  My stories capture the time and events of the era, and the sometimes-unintended consequences not always anticipated by the young boy.

As I was growing into a young teenager my world was shattered by the announcement from my parents of the family moving to Minnesota – and I would be leaving behind all that was familiar my state, my town, my school, my friends including my first girlfriend.

My second book contains the many stories of my moving to Rosemount Mn. (a suburb of Minneapolis), where I attended and graduated from Rosemount Senior High in 1975. This book contains my stories of living and adjusting as a teenager in a new state, new town, new school and the many new students that I would come to know and befriend.

My writing style has been described as easy reading, atmospheric, and reminiscent of the television series The Wonder Years and Boy Meets World!  Adding to my personal stories are many colorful photos of the buildings and places of interest from my childhood.  Then to complete the reading journey I emphasize my stories with well-known quotes and interesting history from the areas I grew up in.

My books are currently available for sale on most book selling sites (Amazon, B&N, Goodreads, Walmarts, Ebay etc.) and have been placed in: the Mid-York (NY) and the Dakota County (Minnesota) library systems; The Farmers Museum in Cooperstown NY; Ilion & Rosemount High Schools, and various historical societies in both NY and Mn.  My book about growing up in Ilion became the #1 book checked out of the Ilion library for all of 2022.  This is one accolade that I am very proud of.
